Ignition Section - A&R Amp & Magnecor leads

This has to be the best 'agenda' opening comment by far

That A&R unit sure is frightening! I took the 'king lead' off the distributor to do some compression tests and the spark jumped about 6 inches - now that's what I call a good HT spark

Ed.

Ignition Amp ( A&R)

Chris,
Fitted the A&R unit. We've seen a 20 to 50% improvement in MPG, depending on the type of driving. This investment will pay for itself in less than 10 weeks - what a bargain! It even improved performance when we had to run on petrol for a while. All this and I haven't uprated the plug leads or regapped the plugs (from that urban myth about LPG being better with a smaller plug gap). Ed

Ed Fish.

Chris,

I know you're a busy man so I will keep this short. I'm the bloke who phoned you from Pembroke Castle ramparts in August asking for advice about my non-running V8 Disco.

Anyway,

I had overhauled the engine prior to travelling to south Wales, fitting a 3.9 cam, new rings and bearings, plus a set of magnacor leads and power amp. What a difference, I am now running at about 20 degrees btdc at idle on LPG and my fuel economy is 17mpg against 13mpg prior to overhaul. In fact, it is now more fuel efficent when towing my comp safari racer, than it was unladen before I did the overhaul. It is also smoother and faster, plus it seems to use less petrol on the few occasions I run it on the expensive stuff!

Thanks again for your advice. Andy Springthorpe Staffs UK

Hi Chris Thanks for finding the time on Saturday morning to fit the A&R unit, Magnacor leads and servicing the distributor. the improvement to performance and smooth running of my V8 is amazing and the idling is now as it should be. Kind regards, Richard Hiles (Reading)

P.S. Thanks for the coffee and the friendliness of all your staff.

Ignition Amp (A&R)

I just had fitted your advance unit for the gas, I rang earlier last week because I didn't understand parts of the instructions and you said any ideas to make the instructions better would be welcomed. 1. where the 2 wires go into the dizzy there is no pos or neg on left or right hole it took a while to work it out, showing which was which would be a big help. left is pos as you know. My friend John fitted it and it is a definate improvement in power I have the RP4 cam, duplex timing chain & new tappets and it goes very well.

I would like to say thanks for your help as it has made a world of difference the power & smoothness are exellent. Alan Lambert

Never under-estimate the quality of Std, O/E, or High street spec. ignition leads.

A typical e-mail quote. Thank you for helping me sort out my misfire problem with the amplifier. You may recall when we spoke that I said that the misfire was when on LPG when the engine was cold. You recommended fitting Magnacore leads as well, but as I had new Lucas leads fitted I said that I would try them out with the amplifier first. The result is the engine is sweet as a nut when cold and a definite improvement in power and fuel consumption.

I am very pleased with it and will be recommending other gas users I speak to. Yours sincerely Peter Munday

Hi Chris, I bought an A&R unit of you a while back to fit to a '93 RR. Unfortunately the original unit died due to some electrical problem. I have fitted the new unit and all seems OK..
As an aside:

I like the new additions to the A&R unit ie the shielded cable to the dizzy and all the necessary connectors provided...makes it a lot easier to do a tidy job. Performance and fuel economy both seem to be increased so I would consider myself impressed with the unit!!!
Thanks for all your help 'Jon Quilliam'

Dear Chris, Sorry I haven't written sooner to thank you and your team for all the hard work you did on my car. By the time I get back from work tonight I will have done 1000 miles since I left Horsford so will change the oil a.s.a.p. It is still running as sweetly as when I left you.

I took the car to my gas installer

He was very interested to see your Advance/Retard amp in the flesh as he'd been reading about them on your website. Also he thought the engine sounded top notch and took a test drive after resetting the gas for me and was full of compliments for the work done and the feel of the car.

It goes without saying that we won't hesitate to contact you again for any specialist work on the car.

Once again, thanks for doing such a good job

Very best wishes Sebastian (Musician from Yorkshire)

Hi Chris Just a quick note to let you know that my Rover is running well on LPG following the conversion that we did a fortnight ago. There is a small but noticeable loss of very low down power (pulling away from lights, junctions etc) on gas. Idle at cold is also a touch rough but fine when fully warmed up. This may be due to the fact that we didn't upgrade the ignition side of things (coil, amp, leads, plugs etc.) or may be down to it needing a tune up after things have bedded in. I have driven about 500 on gas. Can you let me know your thoughts and give me a price on upgrading the ignition side of things?

(Priority) Magnacor leads or A&R. Ignition Amp?

The answer is simple, It's both! And both will gain more of what you wanted.

Hi Chris, just wanted to drop you a line to let you know I've fitted the ignition advance module and the improvement is amazing it seems to go better on LPG than petrol now. I'm considering the next stages of the modifications, I am thinking long term of a 4.6 motor, but for now would appreciate some input as to what other thing I can do to improve the performance and economy of the engine. I was considering an ECU upgrade and different exhaust/manifolds though I'm a bit limited with the CATs. Any thoughts would be a great help.

Thanks and Kind Regards Mark Hodge.

Dear Chris,

I have a 1985 Land Rover 110 with a 3.5 V8 running on twin Solex Carbs. The car also has a Bedini LPG conversion.

I have recently bought from you some Magnecor plug leads, new spark plugs and an A & R Ignition Amp. The car already had a Mallory dual point distributor when I bought it. I am writing to say that the new equipment supplied by you has transformed the car - it runs superbly and has very un-Land Rover like performance (despite the very Land Rover like fuel consumption!)!

Yours sincerely
M. Clough

Dear RPi,
With reference to our recent conversation concerning my suspected A+R power amp. Many thanks for your lightening response to my problem. I received the replacement amp the following morning and fitted it along with a new Lucas coil, as you advised. The intermittent mis-fire appears to have gone, hopefully for good, as one more LPG back-fire would have pushed my nervous system in to "Valium mode". We are also expecting a 50% saving in washing powder uasge over the few weeks.
Thanks for that too.

Sincerely,
James B.
RPi unique LPG & Petrol Tanks

That's the next job after the engine. I have been up to see Chris and an 80 litre tank will fit long ways in the boot next to the spare wheel, leaving boot space and allowing us to still fold down the larger 'half' of the rear seats for any larger loads.

Once it's all (engine and gas) done, hopefully it'll be fine for a few years. As I do around 1000 miles a week the gas conversion will soon pay for itself (at least before the next budget!)

Chris is very helpful and not all that pushy about selling stuff - he is happy (it seems) to offer lots of good advice and he really seems to know V8s. I'd recommend anyone to have a ride out to wildest Norfolk. It's about 90 miles from here, but a worthwhile trip!

Why can't the Italians make the tank gauges releliable?

Dear Chris Arrived home after driving a completely different Range Rover to the one I left a week ago! The difference is amazing, it is so much more responsive. I honestly can't tell any difference between the two [fuels], if anything the gas is better.
However I have a small problem with the tank level indicator, after 165 miles I still have 4 lights on the switchover panel and the tank gauge is still showing approx. 75 litres. Either the tank sender unit is not working or I'm doing about 165 miles to the litre!

I noticed a metallic clank a couple of times coming from the tank, is this normal or has the sender unit fallen apart? Can I change the sender or is it permanently inside the tank? There's no urgency on this, it's just I would like everything working properly. If I can do anything about it will you advise and I'll fit the relevant parts, or shall I wait and pay you a visit next time I come over to Caister?

Thanks again for a superb job I'll spread the RPi gospel around here! COLIN LAW

POSTED ON RANGIE.COM NEWSGROUP

Hi, Just back from Norwich having spent 2 days fitting my LPG conversion to my LSE under the watchfull eye(s) of Chris Crane and his team at RPi.

My initial impressions are favourable, the engine is much smoother at idle, doesn't seem to lose any noticable power when running on gas, and the switchover between gas and petrol is seemless. It's too early yet to comment on economy. Fitting the kit was straight forward though there is quite a bit of work to do. My job was a little more complicated due to the fact I was removing the OE fuel tank, fitting the gas tank in it's place and then fitting one of RPI's inner wing petrol tanks. This was my favoured solution because I didn't want to lose boot space or the ability to run on petrol. This solution gives around 64 litres of gas and 7.5 gallons of petrol (apologies for the unit change :-). The equipment used was Tartarini and is a full closed-loop system with oxygen sensor. The fitting kit was very good with injector emulators (fools the OE ECU into thinking the injectors are still in circuit), ECU for the gas control (handles mixture, switchover etc.) and the other numerous parts.

I will be writing a full article on my conversion, if anyone wants a copy I'll make it available.

New shape Range Rover

Dear Chris, Thank you once again for the time and effort you and your team put into making my car (a 4.6 HSE ) run properly once again.

Actually, it runs even better than it ever did before. The guy at Autogas in Bristol was very impressed and he told me that he would give you a call sometime so I hope that there will be even more business going your way.
To keep this short and simple, I have just one question, do the gaps on my spark plugs have to be reduced for Autogas, is that necessary? If so I will remember to do it every time they change the spark plugs.

Thank you once again. Art

No, as your system is now correct, std plug gap or even wider plug gaps are possible without concern.

3.5 EFi Conversion

Chris,
I've just finished setting up the LPG conversion supplied by you. Very straightforward and no problems at all. The engine fired up first time and switched over to gas no problem. As for the performance, you can tell the difference when on gas, not because you lose power, but because the engine is smooth and flexible with none of the slow running problems you can get on petrol. All through the rev range the engine pulls like a steam train and if anything I think the performance is better on gas than petrol.

The flap opener and A&R amp are definately a 'must-have' for anyone considering this conversion.

Thanks again. Allan Ross

M967 (black Discovery V8i)

You may remember that we had our Discovery converted to LPG (my wife comes up to Norfolk to visit the workshops in Aylsham). We had an Ellipsoid Tank fitted in October 2000 and are extremely happy with the performance, convenience and price. We intend driving to Italy this August and are interested in extending/adding other LPG tanks (2 torpedo?). Could you please contact me with possibility and price at your earliest convenience. I still do not wish to lose the boot space when considering adding more tank space.

Regards Walter

Dear Chris and all at RPi, Thanks for all your help and excellent advice regarding the LPG kit I had from you in March. It is pleasing to know that a company such as yourselves will give so much time talking to people like me even though you are extremely busy. I will definately be back for more, such as a 4.6 engine.

thanks again Andy & Kim (white 1991 3.5 disco.)

Hi Chris & Lisa, Geoff and all

Firstly, may I say a very big thank you for everyone's efforts in getting my LSE dual fuelled. The experience, though tiring, was a very worthwhile one. I fully understand MY system fitted to MY car by MYself ! It really does make the difference knowing the ins and outs of it all. There has been a lot of interest by local Rangie owners and I know for sure of two of them that will be contacting you shortly.

The return journey home was uneventful, the engine running as smooth as ever, I changed between petrol and gas several times (new button to play with) and it never missed a beat.

I do hope your business continues to prosper. With the service, product and your magical know-how you really do deserve to be hugely succesful.

Kind Regards John Bridgett

COMMENTS ABOUT RPi Very friendly people BUT very busy. They will certainly do their best to accomodate you, but you must realise they are running a business. I was there for 2 days and I would say around 25% of that time I was waiting for information or guidance. It wasn't as bad as it sounds, sort of 10 mins here and there etc. The engineers are very willing and able and the quality of workmanship and information second to none. I really appreciated the help and assistance that I was given and would have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone considering going LPG. RPi are experts in the field of V8 engines (Rover in particular) and LPG.

This is a completely unbiased mini review of RPi and their products. I have no connection with RPi other than that of a very satisfied customer.

Kind Regards John.

Hi Chris, Just a quick thanks for the work done on my Disco yesterday. Great driving home and, yes, better economy. Twenty more miles out of the filling than I've had in six months.
If that keeps up (which I'm sure it will) then I'm a happy bunny. You were right about the kick-down under LPG - it's as good as under petrol now.
Thanks again to Steve: I appreciated his skill and attitude.

A happy and blessed Christmas to you and yours.

Regards Robin Davies Reading

Chris. I have replied many times to questions on this re LPG conversions. For those of you who don't remember me brief details are :- Range Rover 4.2, Tartarini LPG Conversion fitted by myself under the watchfull eyes of RPi engineering - the V8 / LPG Specialists at Norwich.

A few people have been asking in the past about RPi and I would like to share the following information. 3 months after I converted my Rangie I started to smell gas (no I hadn't been eating beans). Try as I might I could not locate the leak. Finally after another 6 weeks I traced the leak to the vapouriser / regulator unit. I spoke to RPi who told me they were having dificulties with Tartarini vaporisers and had since stopped supplying them due to unreliability.

They also put me in touch with the importers. I offered to drive my vehicle to them but they said they would send the relevant parts to me. The problem was caused by, in their words 'impurities in the UK LPG'. The new diaphram arrived and was fitted - brilliant, back to normal. 2 weeks later, same again, I was totally p**sed off now, back on the phone to RPi, ready for an argument, guns blazing.
No need, Chris Crane (the proprieter) suggested that I upgrade to the much better tandem OMVL vapouriser and a bigger mixer and all I paid was a minimal amount to cover the difference and postage. What a difference! 3 mpg better, 0 to 60 reduced by 0.8 seconds and it is now so smooth.

Just shows it really is NOT worth dealing with cowboys, you may pay a little more to start with, but backup like this means an awful lot more.

Chris if you're reading this - Many thanks Regards - John Bridgett

Morgan plus 8 Carb. models

Chris Just a quick note of thanks to you and Lisa for your efficient handling of the (Weber 500) carbie kit for my Plus 8 (which arrived remarkably quickly), It's all fitted now (no problems whatever), and my Mog really is transformed.

Your tips on the website were most useful. Unlike one of the testimonials on your website, my car did NOT start on the first turn of the key. That was because I forgot to reconnect the fuel pump. When I did that it DID start first go, and I only needed about a quarter turn in of the mixture screws from the recommended two-turns-out starting point to achieve excellent performance throughout the rev range.

Bonnet clearance and accessibility is superb, and it looks really great. Again, many thanks

Regards Mal Bunny

Hi folks.

They said I should wait, but I couldn't... I went and bought the Tornado chip from Chris Crane, RPI. I also ordered new innards (tubes) for the plenum chamber, knock sensors (which were missing) and Magnacor plug leads. A small hours works and I was ready to turn the key. Talk about plug and play!! It fired at first attempt, and ran as smoothly as never before.

I was quite nervous for the test drive. No worries. It went like a bomb. It used to start protesting at app. 4500 RPM. It now runs up to 7000 (ok, I know I have to take it easy) like a turbine. Chris claims a 20 -25 % increase in HP and torque. I fully believe him. This engine (the Rover SAGEM GEMS 4.0) is in reality detuned from the factory and has an enormous potential for chip trimming.

With tubular manifolds and anti tramp bars my LM62 +8 will really be getting serious. That will have to wait 'till winter, though. Now all I want to do is DRIVE!!

Morgan plus 8 Hot Wire injection.

Mr. Chris Crane and Ian Thurtell,
Many thanks for your presents an congratulations with 25 years of RPI Engineering.
We have found the cause of the problem. The Power Boost Valve did not work properly.
We installed a' new one. The pressure is 3,3 atm/1000 rpm and 4,3 atm/5500 rpm.
From 800-5500 rpm now the engine keeps running regular and performs very powerful.
You were right, the TORNADO-chip was working correct.
Now I am very glad with my 4,6 ltr. and RPI parts.
Many thanks for your help.
Kind regards
Wil G

Race spec. Morgan + 8 3.9. Now with RPi Tornado chip.

After testing the upgrade, The owner could not wait to go out and play.
0 to 100mph, now, achieved in only 12 seconds with superb engine torque increases. from an otherwise stock, blueprinted engine.

Hope all is well.
We had our first nice springdays yesterday and today. I took Moggie to the airfield and winched up my paraglider for the first flight of the year.Fantastic thermal conditions so I climbed rapidly to over 6000 ft and went away with the winds. Landed far away from home near a petrol station. Got hike with two nice girls back to the field. Invited the nicest in a racy/tourqy tour in Moggie and it ended up with a sucsessful date

thanks to the enormous RPi 4.6 power.... (even all other Mogfriends are impressed). The engine performs perfekt. The oil now stay clean as syrup with no consumption and I feel the enginge start to loose up. Lovely (despite the expensive bill for it) Happy Easter/Ulf Ulf Bergers (Sweden)

Morgan plus 8 (hot wire EFi)

Dear Chris,
Just to refresh your memory, I'm the guy in Montana you called, that purchased the Optimax chip, ignition amp and fuel regulator. I got the chip installed and it certainly seems smoother and more responsive. As I told Lorne Goldman (www.gomog.com)
I didn't think the Morgan could run much better than it did when I bought it.

Ran the Morgan today for 60 miles with your Stage 1 heads and Rp4 cam.Feels really good,I've always fitted Crane Cams in the past but this Rp4 takes some beating for fast road use.

Will let you know full story once we have set the whole thing up on the rolling road in a couple of weeks.

Thanks also for the R380, should have that installed into another moggie by the weekend. Will be glad when my new engine building room is complete, and can start building more fast road/track V8 engines!
Please pass on my thanks to Lisa for all her sterling efforts so far. Regards Andreas Adamou, Autorapide (Morgan Service Agents) for North Somerset.

Hi Chris!

It's been about five weeks now that I've had your Tornado chip in my Morgan Plus 8 4.6. I am very pleased with it and the Magnecor Competition ignition leads installed at the same time. Everything has settled in nicely: The engine idle is absolutely rock-steady with instantaneous pick-up.

There are no flat-spots, and rather than running out of breath at around 4,500 rpm the engine's in-gear performance now displays a second wind at 3,000 rpm and eagerly revs to 5,000 rpm and beyond.

Can't make any judgement about 5th gear performance beyond 4,400 rpm yet: that will have to wait until I go to Germany.

The engine certainly feels rather more perky. Fuel consumption in town is unchanged and about 10% better on a trip. There is a marked improvement in throttle response: it now borders on the telepathic.

The more I drive the car, the more I appreciate the changes to the engine management. The improvement in driveability is considerable.

Many thanks, and kind regards, Achim Gloger

20k, 'miles' Later !!.
Dear Chris,
It was good to talk to this morning. I have now had 20,000 enjoyable miles out of your 4.6 litre conversion for my 3.9 litre V8 Morgan. It runs so smoothly and delivers torque like a steam engine. We have been to France many times and have enjoyed motoring like it was before the roads filled up. I would be grateful if you would please send me a health check. My e-mail did not reach you this morning because of change in e-mail address. Looking forward to hearing from you. Best wishes and many thanks,

Dear Chris
The Morgan has now been chipped, and does run much more freely. A marked improvement. Although I have librands manifold it is still running on standard pipes and the cats are still in situ. What is the next stage that I could consider? I still would love a smidgen more noise. With best regards George

Dear Chris,

Just to let you know that the Morgan is running beautifully with your delightful 4.6l engne. I took it to France earlier this year and it ran for over 500 miles without a murmur. Mark Adams tells me that it is the quietest V8 that he has ever come across and I would say it is a delight to drive. Many thanks for giving me such fun and satisfaction. kind regards, John H.

Hi Chris..
I just want to drop you a line about my newly chipped Morgan LeMans -62 +8.

It took about 1 hour to mount the knock sensors, plenum chamber tubes, Magnacor leads and new, chipped CPU in my Morgan. It fired instantly and runs very smoothly at 8-900 at idle. Torque is enormous, and it revs freely to nearly 7000. I haven't run very far yet, as I did it this afternoon, but it seems to be a great success. If it keeps running like this I'll be very happy indeed.

Yours

Hi Chris

It really would be wrong not to record my thanks for the amazing support and help from Ian over the last 2 days. I am a complete luddite where computers are concerned and his patience as he talked me through everything was amazing.

I know you would want to pass this on to him, well impressed does not come close.

Dear Chris and team

Just had to write to let you have my thoughts on the recent engine upgrade on my Morgan +8 i.e. the tornado chip and Magnecor leads.

Having initially been impressed by the instant improvement in power and acceleration, I have taken some time to live with the car in its new configuration to see if there are any drawbacks at all - and I am delighted to say I can find none - the car is simply a pleasure to drive and enjoy to the full. Although it is fair to say that even more care is now required, especially in the wet, if tempted to use the power injudiciously.

The most obvious changes are the improved responsiveness to the throttle, throughout the rev range, though I confess I have not yet dared to go much beyond 6000 rpm - I'm sure there is still more there should I get a suitable opportunity to use it! There is at the same time a smooth flexibility and full advantage can be taken of the immense torque of this engine, which will pull away in 5th at 10 mph if you want it to!

It idles smoothly at rest now too, a recurring problem with the engine before, sometimes even suffering embarrassing stalling at traffic lights. No such problems any more.

And, to cap it all, your sports exhaust system makes it sound like a real sports car should! To the extent that the car has provoked much curiousity from anyone who has heard it coming!

Thanks to everyone for delivering 100% on what you had promised for this modification. I am now considering what might be the next stage - but that will have to wait for a few months whilst I make the most of the summer...

Kind regards

Paul W

Hello Lisa,
Fitted the Optimax in the RV8: perfect match to this car, smooth acceleration in any gear without any hesitation.
Great job!

Now I have to save money for the Tornado into my Classic Range Rover :-)

Kind regards,

Hi Ian, Chris and Steve,
I am pleased to say I am delighted with the work you did on Tuesday with the Optimax chip and new Magnecor plug leads, at first I thought that was a lot of money for little gain other than a smoother low end pull as demonstrated round the lanes, given also that Chris had indicated that RV8 was fairly well sorted anyway with out the Cats on the original test run. I then had the trek back round Norwich and the 100 odd miles home, I realised that the car was so much smoother in traffic and that I was not hopping between gears in the 20-40mph zones through the city and on the A11 there was no need to drop down to 2nd to get a smooth fast pull away from roundabouts, I was getting all I needed from 3rd with a strong smooth pull with less revs, just cleaner faster exits. The exhaust note was also changing slightly to be more grunty, a little fun with a Porsche also proved that top end rev range pulled longer and stronger much to his surprise. A day round London the following day proved that the subtle changes in the MG's drivability actually had given major improvements to the driving enjoyment and journey. Some 400 miles later, as you said Ian, it would improve still further as the ECU and car settled to my driving style.

I always have a grin when I drive the RV8, it is now a lot wider, many thanks guys, job well done!!

Kind regards,
Tim

Many thanks for your hospitality last Thursday, good to see a highly motivated group of people. Herewith my initial report on the Optimaxed RV8. Nothing phenomenal but the whole transmission and car is improved, and more tractable. Pick up response is smoother with more torque at lower RPM. Progression through the gears is smoother and there is no hesitation which was manifested as a slight clunk in the final drive on pick up. Initial assessment on fuel consumption is a 10% increase in mpg. I feel (and correct me if I'm wrong) that a set of flowed, shortened and polished trumpets will improve the breathing, together with improving air intake to the K&N left of the radiator.
Will you kindly quote for upgrading my inlet manifold with shortened, flowed and polished trumpets, also the turn-round time. MGB GT V8 (1974) I wish to maintain my cast-iron manifolds, kindly include your price to match and polish my cylinder heads to the exhaust manifolds and the inlet manifold. The engine spec. remains as original with SU HIF6 carbs. Also inform the turnaround time for the above.

As we have said, these improvements are very addictive and I suspect we will be seeing more of this one soon.

MG RV8 PERFORMANCE UPGRADE

This article followed from our notification of the Exported MG-RV8. Having its distributor vacuum pipe connected incorrectly on all Japanese RV8 re-imports, almost all throttle response and about 15 bhp of engine power was lost due to this. The correction, however, took 5 seconds and cost nothing, tempting many into further upgrades. (MG World April/May 1999)

Feedback

Following the recent report regarding incorrect engine vacuum usage of the RV8 (MG World April/May 1999), those V8 chaps at RPi Engineering have been delving deeper into those locked out efficiency gains inherent in the stock MG RV8.

For those owners who would like a smoother response, improved torque and economy, I recommend that you contact RPi International Ltd. in Norwich, it's all in there, and yet again there is no need for a single spanner inside your engine.

RPi have been developing many Eprom (Chips) for all model Efi Rovers (i.e. TVR, Morgan, Range Rover, Westfield etc.), and now the MG RV8. Unlike most re-chipping, their targets and goals are somewhat different. Most companies offering ECU Chipping would only seek to improve/enhance top end performance (i.e. in search of bigger BHP numbers), and, because they always strive to achieve more than their rivals, this normally only means an increase in top end fuelling where they can claim more BHP. To anyone with any knowledge of engine fueling, it is easy to see that this is indeed a poor compromise for street use. For most that strive to improve not only top-end bhp but, more importantly, part throttle response and high torque load areas, 1000-4500rpm is the area where most if not all power & efficiency gains are actually appreciated (unless of course you are racing only).

They say the secret to correct chipping is to place each vehicle type on a rolling road and, with a lap top computer, interrogate all the engine's fuel, timing & load options, not just a flat out revs but the complete three dimensional fuel map. This is where all part throttle and high load driving is taken care of.

And the result

Lower possible emissions not just at idle where the MOT is tested but throughout the rev and engine load range, thus producing ultimate economy, efficiency and overall power with smoother power gains throughout. Installation and setting-up takes around one hour. Contact Chris Crane on 01603 891209 or email: info@v8engines.com for prices etc. The company specializes in Rover V8 engines and has much advice to give on the RV8 including supply of associated spare parts.

Dear Chris,

Edelbrook conversion is now running. The car is far more responsive to the throttle with a MUCH improved power delivery. The engine runs more smoothly, but the way I'm driving it at the moment I appear to be using quite a bit. However, when cruising at 85mph and hitting 95mph up hill I suppose I cannot expect anything less. With the SUs, the car would have hesitated to reach 80mph up the same hill and there would have been a 'dead spot' on the throttle at 75mph making a cruise at around 80-85mph not very smooth.

Thanks for the help and advice given to me and John, my mechanic. The trouble is I now would dearly love chromed rocker covers!!! I'll save up a bit more and 'phone through my order a.s.a.p. I'll also get in touch when funds permit the next phase of the project to convert to LPG. Best regards, Stephen

Lisa A couple of weeks ago, I ordered from you a load of V8 goodies to upgrade my MGB V8 (Edelbrock 500 card, manifold etc etc). I also ordered a Mallory dual-point distributor. All the parts arrived without any problems - many thanks for such a speedy and efficient response.
Best wishes

Anyway, I've just got back from a cruise down to Brighton for a wedding. Fantastic drive! The most incredible thing, I reckon, is the fuel consumption! It cost me about £45 round trip. 330 miles! Travelling on average at between 80 and 90mph. I think that's absolutely awesome from a 4.2! Impressed I am!

Hi,
Thanks for getting the Weber through so quick - I received it on Friday and fitted it on Saturday morning! Everything went really smoothly and once the petrol was fed through it fired up first time. Excellent!

The Stag goes much better with the Weber than it ever did with the Holley and, what's more, it appears to run a lot smoother and with none of the smoke that it used to bellow out!
Thanks again for a great service. Tim

Hello Chris,
First of all I wish you a happy and succesfull new year !!.
I plugged in the Tornado chip and did a little test driving. The road conditions were not good the last few weeks so I could not run at full power, but I felt that the engine ran much better at low revs. I look forward to the improvement of the RPM range above 5000.

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the advice and the good job you did setting up my V8 Dax Rush yesterday. The drive home demonstrated how much improved it now is. The best part is the nice smooth idle and the low-speed driveability. It now ticks over with no lumpiness and doesn't cause transmission backlash when pottering round town. It sounds like a V8 at idle should do. I can now floor the throttle in 5th at 30mph without getting any hesitation on pick-up. 60mph comes up 6 seconds later!
Although the mid-range punch doesn't subjectively feel much more than it was, the numbers do seem to come up quicker. This is probably due to the increased smoothness of the engine.
It cost about ten pounds in petrol to get to RPi, doing 60mph on dual carriageways for maximum economy. On the trip home I used the country lanes and wasn't gentle with the throttle. Despite being a longer trip, only about eight pounds' worth of fuel was used. The extra economy makes me happier about long journeys to show the Dax off to friends and family!
Please can you email me copies of the pictures you took of me and the Dax yesterday for my website. My build site is at http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/dhurst and, yes, there is a link to RPi! Please feel free to link to my site.

Thanks again.

Here is some feed back that you can put on your site if you wish, regarding the upgrade of my 3.5 Westfield.
When arriving at RPi and discussing my requirements with Chris, he told me something very basic. 'If you stick a 3.5 V8 in a car the size and weight of a Westfield, undoubtedly it will be quick, this however does not mean that all is well.' The whole purpose of what I was trying to achieve was to spark some life into the lump beneath the bonnet. I knew it had potential, however it seemed to lack that certain 'Turn the passenger white as a sheet' effect that I was looking for. As I'm not mechanically minded I was quite impressed with the experience and knowledge of the whole team at RPi and let them do what they do best, sort it out .And they Did!
I am still not convinced it is actually the same engine that's in my car.The difference is THAT dramatic.Where have the flat spots gone? As well as the performance it also looks the part. The new rockers and plumbing although relatively inexpensive do make a big difference to the whole appearance of the engine.
The 2-hour drive home was fairly uneventful (apologies to the mini driver on the A11), but that was down to over-zealous driving more than anything else (can you blame me), and my fan sticking on the housing (an old problem). Gave me some grief about 20 mins into the journey, but soon sorted that out.
I asked for power, I got power, if I had asked for it to fly I'm sure they would have stuck a set of wings on.
On a serious note I now have the car I thought I was buying in the first place ... and am I happy? What do you think!

Thanks again, Stephen

Dear Chris, sorry for not mailing such a long time,

but I was very busy and also for a few weeks ill, but now I´m ok. Your Westfield section is very good information for all WESTFIELD drivers.

Please excuse that I can`t write in my bad English about the conversion you have done for me. I hope your German mechanic will translate it for you.

Yes I would like to have the disc with the pictures you have done. Chris I´m looking for a new and better (carbon?) plenum chamber for the WESTFIELD, can you offer me one? I hope I will see you in 2000 again to talk about the engine (show you my new air-box and exhaust system) and perhaps about new stage 2 (3?) heads. I will come with a small group of German Seven owners to the Stoneleigh Kit-Car show in May (1- 2 May, Bank Holiday) happy motoring. Jochen

Hi chris,
Just an update from my visit to RPi on the 23-27 July in my Yellow Westfield eight, Well after driving the car now for about 2 years after building it and never been totally happy with the way the engine has run, and after been given all types of useless info from other people, my Westfield is now amazing to drive. After my visit to RPi the engine has never been better, with smooth running even at 20mph in fifth and pulls all the way to 100mph+ with masses of power available in every gear, the transformation was amazing and it feels like a totally different engine, the drive home to Cleveland was great with the Westfield blasting down the road and the roar from the exhausts as the accellerator hits the deck was what made it all worthwhile (4 years from start to finish) and we made the trip in 4 Hours Dead.
So after nearly 4 years from starting the dream of owning a Westfield and 2 years trying the get Westfield to run properly, I can say that the car is now finally finished and I can now start to enjoy the driving experience from her.
Thanks to everyone at RPi for all your help, and I will send anyone who needs help in your direction.
Thanks again
Scott Richmond

Even this 185mph 500 bhp Ferrari needs an RPi chip

Chipping ensures it doesn't get there late.

There are no flat-spots, and rather than running out of breath at around 4,500 rpm, the engine's in-gear performance now displays a second wind at 3,000 rpm and eagerly revs to 5,000 rpm and beyond.

Can't make any judgement about 5th gear performance beyond 4,400 rpm yet, that will have to wait until I go to Germany.

Many thanks and kind regards, Achim Gloger

Gems (4.6 Hse & 4.0 Se.) Chipping for Efficiency, Economy and that missing power!

Chris

I got the chips and fitted them last night. I think the most difficult part of the process was getting the covers off the old chips as I was afraid of damanging the circuit board! The instructions are pretty simple - it makes it about as difficult as changing a plug! After I fitted the chips, the engine sounded a bit rough at first, which I assume was down to the computer needing to re-learn the engine parameters, but this smoothed out after the first trip.

Once out on the road, initial results are very positive - I never saw 24 MPG on the trip computer before! Kick-down seems much more immediate, and acceleration more postive rather than the 'oh, you want to go faster ...? right... er... hang on... change down... wait a mo... here we go ... any minute now ... there you are....' that I was used to.

I'll be back in touch probably mid-August to arrange the LPG part - I don't have time to get this done before September since my weekends are fully booked.

Range Rover Discovery Chipping.

I've now had my Disco at SAC (www.steves.co.za) who must rate as the most reputable tuning house in SA:
Here are my findings as measured at the wheels with 2 wheel dyno by SAC on both occasions:
With 3.9 + Unichip + 245/70/16 tyres: 82KW @ 4300 / 250Nm @ 3300
With 4.6 +Unichip + tornado chip +245 / 75 (!!! NB !!!) / 16 tyres: 111Kw @ 4300 / 307Nm @ 3400 Above figures were measured at 1500m above sea level. SAC found the TORNADO was running a little lean at low RPM and a little rich at high RPM but acknowledged that it was one of the best chips they've come accross.
This (and timing) was corrected with the UNICHIP. Before they tuned it, it was idling rough, and backfiring on overrun. Now she idles smooth, and the backfiring is limited only to a very abrupt 'parp' immediately after releasing the throttle - must be for less than 0.25 seconds. The rest of the overrun is clean. My conclusion is that I am very satisfied with the result and I feel I got my money's worth. PS: I'm already saving for a 5.2 for the HSE - yet to be purchased ;-)

Kind regards Philip Lochner South Africa.

TVR Tasmin 400se 1991 - 4.0L

Chris, Just a note to let you know how the EPROM change went. History of car: TVR Tasmin 400se 1991 - 4.0L hotwire. Big Valve Heads and uprated camshaft (origin: Wedge Automotive, but spec unknown). The car is also fitted with big bore 3" exhaust. The car was over fuelling and was generally uneconomical. It was subsequently found to have the 4.5L EPROM in the ECU - obviously to try to increase fuelling after mods. I purchased one of your Optimax chips and am generally pleased with the results. It has cured erratic idle problems and given me an increase in mid-range torque. It also makes the engine a lot more flexible - with the ability to pull from lower rpm.

Range Rover Upgrade

After having had the RPi chip and ignition amplifier in my car for a while, I am now in a position to offer my considered opinions on the mods.
The engine feels smoother and more responsive, making it more pleasurable to drive. Overtaking, using kickdown, is much better than before, with the whole process being smoother with the revised power characteristics allowing the engine to hang on to gears for longer.
Hill climbing is easier too, the vehicle tackles long motorway inclines without the need for extra throttle as before.
Fuel consumption figures taken very accurately are as follows:

Hard motorway driving 85 - 90 mph -16.7mpg
Overall urban driving, (not that gentle) - 15.5mpg
Towing 19ft caravan, 55 mph - 17.5mpg
Towing 19ft caravan, 65mph - 15.5mpg

These figures generally represent a 1-2.5 mpg improvement on figures previously experienced. I am most happy with the mods and consider it essential for any Rover V8, the engine is such a joy to drive now, and changes the whole vehicle.
The only downside to the mods are that the driver is encouraged to drive harder using a heavier right foot which puts one at the risk of speed cameras which was not previously a problem in the Range Rover! Yours sincerely, Bill Barclay

Dear Chris

New Range Rover 4.0 (Gems)

Following my visit to you yesterday, I am happy to report the following: Consumption on the trip to you from home was 19mpg. Fuel consumption on the trip home was 22.3mpg. - You said it would improve. (these figures are according to the on board computer)

The vehicle is also far more willing and pulls harder with less throttle. I must congratulate you on your level of service offered to us.

The coffee and lollipop for the family was a nice touch. I am extremely suspicious about all in the motor trade and it was refreshing to find someone who tells it as it is. I look forward to a gas conversion to my vehicle and maybe a couple of other tweaks at the same time. Thank you again for your hospitality.

Best regards Rory Bostock

Dear sirs
Firstly, I must say the chip you sold me last week and fitted is the best upgrade I have seen. We sell chips for Porsches but always have 3/4 hours set-up per car after fitting. With reference the gas conversion, if the price fitted is all in for £1000 I would like to book it in for around 6th Sept, please advise. Also we discussed the fitting of the spare wheel to the Range Rover's rear tailgate, please also price.

Thanks

After having a good drive back to Northampton last night, the differences made by the chip became very apparent, and the car has been measurably improved in both performance and driveability.

Weber Section

Thanks guys

Rover P6 - V8 - Piper Cam, Webber etc

I've finally got the car running ... 6 months ... after the initial burst of action things slowed down until my wife started complaining (not much) about the "wreck" in the garage.

The package and information you sent was virtually turn key. Congratulations on an excellent service.

The only difficulty was my lack of knowledge and reluctance to finish a job ... the reluctance is all behind me, the cam and carb were the simplest part of the whole exercise. They have a rumbling sound that can only be described as evil, every time I start the engine it gives me "chicken skin" as it cackles and barks.

The choke is now a thing of the past, with the SU carbs I had a starting routine of run for three minutes on full choke, half choke then, cough, stall, restart, full choke another minute, then move. With the new carb and manifold its "wurr, bark" and off (slight pause to allow the goose bumps to be removed from my arm and the oil to do its thing).

I'm very happy with the performance, the flat spot that used to be attached to the throttle, you know, foot down ... pause ... paint dries ... then the engine woke up ... has gone, power is instant.

Cool!

I've just a little matter of fabricating a auto kick down ...

Thanks again for the parts and the service ... I would recommend your service any international person.

C Moon

Hi Chris,
Just thought I would drop you a line to say how my Rover SD1 is going after you fitted a Weber 500 and Mallory.
Quick, that's how!

Great drive back to Chester with smooth, seamless power and a fantastic growl on full throttle, and it really takes off above 3000 R.P.M.

It does seem to use less fuel as well, despite the occasional 'playing' with the secondaries!

All the Best,
Peter Backhouse.

Weber 500 - 3.5 Range Rover application.

I can say that the car is completely different. It is much stronger, quicker and has got a complete new sound. It is much more responsive. - and even with only about 60-70% of the throttle its supposed to have, it has become a much better car!
Thank you very much for supplying this kit - I really enjoy it! If you need yet another happy reference, you have got it!

Kai Roer
Norway.

Dear RPi
Just a quick note to say that the Webber carb kit purchased from you and fitted to my 3.5 EFI Range Rover Auto has at last given me what I needed. Reliability, no fuss, no head scratching, just smooth power. The conversion was a piece of cake. Apart from the reliability factor, the engine is smoother, more economical, and has a noticeable increase in power, especially when towing. Thanks for the kick-down bracket, it all fitted together so easily. I must say that rather than bother with sorting out ECU and Injection components, the Webber has proved to be the simplest and most economic route to a reliable vehicle.

Thanks,

Paul Gibbins

Weber 500 & Cobra 289

Chris, I fitted the Weber 500 to the BRA 289 4.6 this evening. Instead of a lumpy tickover at 800 rpm (the best I could get the Holley set up for), the tickover was a silky smooth 600 rpm, even with a cold engine and no choke connected - and straight out of the box. I was able to lower this to under 200 rpm (guessing, because the tacho needle hardly moved off the end stop, but engine was still cold), and then raised the tickover back to 600 rpm (worried about low oil pressure when warm). I can't wait to take the car out tomorrow, to set up the mixture once warm, and see what it does on the road! Will keep you informed. Best regards,

David (Butcher) Germany

Hi Chris, I have just fitted the Weber 500 carb and Offy manifold to the 3.9 in my Mk2 Granada Estate. It goes like a dream, ticks over smoothly, and pulls up the one-mile-long steep hill near me like a little sports car. I first 'V8-ed' my Granny 9 years ago with a standard 3.5 and, after various little changes, now have a 3.9 and stage one heads (from you) plus the carb kit I have just fitted. When I phoned for advice, you and your team were always very helpful. Thank you, I am pleased as punch with the car and am off to Wales this afternoon in it.

Cheers,

Weber, Mallory and a 'budget priced' Cam Kit Upgrade

After a Couple of small MG-inspired issues, this stock 75K miles Original MG had a 3.9EFi cam, Weber 500 and Mallory Duel point ignition upgrade. The customer's comments speak for themselves.

Good bloody grief!! All of a sudden it felt like I had another 30 horses! (this was 30bhp more than the 30bhp gained already from the original upgrade and before final set up) Under WOT in first gear the car will fishtail left-right-left and the first time I tried an overtaking manouevre on a semi-trailer truck, changing into second under full power almost snapped the car totally sideways! VBG Woo hoo is all I can say :) I DO have to be a bit careful with the car now! She lights up the rear wheels at anything over 4000rpm in first and also on the change into second.

BTW, bragging I know, but I absolutely ate an M3 who wanted a race last night (up to 60mph where I chicked out on a public street). Boy that was a shock. He wouldn't leave me alone, beeping at me when I pulled over to fill up for gas, wanting another go!!) How childish! ;) Pity about the corners ... the suspension, the brakes, all feel VERY OLD right about now, and they are all brand new ( but not from RPi).

Thanks Chris, this really is a wonderful combo (she also idles beautifully and has already withstood 2hrs locked in Dublin traffic). I don't think I've ever had such a big smile on my face after driving any car. The other thing is the sound, wow it sure sounds like a V8 now!

Chris,

Bought a couple of heads, a Weber and a Malory (electronic) for my 4.6 (in an MGB) last year. Thought I'd let you know that when I got it tested on a dyno it was producing 270Bhp and 350 lb/ft! I am somewhat surprised by these figures as it clearly out-guns even your stage 3 as quoted on your site.

Not sure what cam I have, but the heads were just your standard RPi stage 1.
The guy at the test station adjusted it to just 6 deg. BTDC at idle, which gave an extra 30bhp over how I had it set up.

The torque is staggering - it accelerates quite happily from around 400-500rpm in 5th (about 10-12 mph). Who needs gears?! Just wanted to say thanks. I am very impressed that a collection of bits supplied by you could make so much difference with very little configuration needed.

Dear Chris

Hi, I purchased a Weber 500 carburetor and Edelbrock manifold a couple of months ago. I have fitted it to a 3.5 V8 in a Landrover lightweight. It has improved wide open throttle and idle. It is brilliant compared to the original set up. I am very pleased with it.

Keep up the good work with the web site, I think it's very informative, there is nothing to match it on the Internet for details on the Rover V8. I have also included a picture of my Landrover. Thanks, William Foster.

My Lightweight

That was speedy!

After reading your site, I'm now thinking about changing the dizzy to a Mallory. It has a Lumenition kit in reasonably good condition Lucas dizzy at present, but I think it could go better than it does. Anyway, thanks for all the info on your site on that too.

I'm going to print it out & read it again.

Hello again, bet you hoped you'd heard the last of me. (Weber 500 Upgrade)

Hello again, bet you hoped you'd heard the last of me. Actually I was writing to say that fuel economy has gone up from 11mpg to at least 14.5 (driving continually round central London) which I make out to be an improvement of over 30% - and I haven't even had it tuned properly yet. It runs absolutely smoothly and if you put your foot down (which is oh so tempting) emits a deeply satisfying startled roar oh so unlike the muted grumble I used to get. Oh dear I must sound almost poetical. One remaining question: I can't work out how to connect the supplied throttle cable to the pedal, which I would like to do as the original had to be botched to fit and is a little short. Again many thanks Andy Spark

re: weber 500 I bought.

Well, I thought I'd keep you posted. The petrol strike caught me unawares and having managed to cram 10 gallons in the Land Rover 90 I pottered down the motorway from my parents in Leicester at a steady 55mph ... Finding another filling station with petrol, I topped up again at the other end, and was more than pleasantly surprised to find that I was averaging 27 mpg. I don't think I'd ever have got that much out of the Strombergs.

Just installed the new Weber carb you sent me and its brill, as you said 'plug and play' the old Holley was thrown in the rubbish where it belonged. Had to make slight mod to the throttle lever to gain full throttle but less than an hour's work from start to finish. I would recommend to all your customers who drive off road or who want instant power without any problems (Holley), buy the Weber. A very happy desert-dualer! ALAN MC DOWALL U.A.E.

Dear Chris,

Remember me? Alex St Matthew-Daniel, the man with the Rover P5B that we 'bolted on' an Edelbrock manifold and Weber carbs to. I Just wanted to say that all is going well. The old girl can really pick up her skirts now but still retains her dignity. I seriously embarrassed a Golf GTi owner the other day. The opportunity to come down and work on my car at your workshop was a unique and enjoyable education. Could you pass my special thanks to Geoffrey and Holly for their patience and expertise. I am hopefully looking forward to a future instalment.

I purchased an Edelbrock performer carburettor from you about two years ago to fit a 3.9, and I just wanted to say how pleased I have been with it. It seems more powerful than the standard EFI, as economical, and runs cleaner. It always starts first time and goes like a rocket in my Range Rover pick-up. I hunger for more power though, and soon may consider a larger capacity, though money is the big issue. :-)

Chris, You put a Weber into my 3.9 SD1 automatic a few weeks ago and it is a great success:
Top end performance is amazing and I think the low end torque is better too. I haven't checked fuel consumption accurately yet, but it seems no worse than either the original Strombergs or the later SUs, even allowing for using the much better performance.

The only problem I've had is the oil pressure relief valve stuck open! But that's a different story, regards,

Chris,
Just wanted to say thanks for a great day a week last Friday (27/8) when I visited you to get a cam, Weber 500 carb and distributor fitted to my SD1. I was delighted to be given a pair of overalls and the chance to help out while Paul did the difficult bits. The car is a completely different animal now thanks to the new cam, carb and manifold - much more as I would have hoped a V8 would sound and go. But, of course, I now want more - I have a feeling that I'll have to be back next year, perhaps for a 4.6 with stage 3 heads.
Next time I'll wear sensible clothes and bring my own overalls - they fit better!

Cheers,
Mike Evans.

Chris,
I finally fitted the Weber and manifold and am impressed how it works so well 'out of the box'. Smooth faster acceleration and part throttle running. I am looking forward to getting in a decent run to have a look at the fuel economy. Best regards, David Mildwater Australia.

Lisa and Team,

I would like to thank all the Team at RPI, with a special mention to Chris. Everything that RPi has helped me with has been absolutely correct. The team has fielded many questions from me and have always given professional advice, looking to support my ownership of the classic car, not classic bills!

The Weber conversion kit has really impressed to the extent that I thought I was driving a different car. The Rover V8 specialist who fitted the kit, was so impressed he is looking to order one as well (to replace his Holley). The specialist raised his eyes, when I told him all parts needed had been supplied, he again was impressed that the kit was a kit that actually went together very simply. Great advice with great product!

Again all my thanks from 'the other' not 'the under' side of the world, for giving me an engine that now breaths like a dragon.

Hello again, Bet you hoped you'd heard the last of me

Actually I was writing to say that fuel economy has gone up from 11mpg to at least 14.5 (driving continually round central London) which I make out to be an improvement of over 30% -and I haven't even had it tuned properly yet. It runs absolutely smoothly and if you put your foot down (which is oh so tempting) emits a deeply satisfying startled roar oh so unlike the muted grumble I used to get. Oh dear, I must sound almost poetical.... One remaining question: I can't work out how to connect the supplied throttle cable to the pedal, which I would like to do as the original had to be botched to fit and is a little short. Again many thanks Andy Spark

Dear Chris

p.s. installed your (totally comprehensive) Edelbrock/Weber manifold carb and filter on my 3.5 Rover engined Cobra and found it a simple conversion which has allowed the full potential of my engine modifications to be realized. It has now completed the Belgium to Sicily rally and 20hr round Wales rally with no problems other than the driving!! many thanks again.

Could you pass my special thanks to Geoffrey and Holley for their patience and expertise. I am hopefully looking forward to a future instalment.

Chris, You put a Weber into my 3.9 SD1 automatic a few weeks ago and it is a great success: top end performance is amazing and I think the low end torque is better too. I haven't checked fuel consumption accurately yet, but it seems no worse than either the original Strombergs or the later SUs, even allowing for using the much better performance. The only problem I've had is the oil pressure relief valve stuck open! But that's a different story, regards. David Parsons UK

Just installed the new Weber carb you sent me and its brill, as you said 'plug and play'. The old Holley was thrown in the rubbish where it belonged. Had to make a slight mod to the throttle lever to gain full throttle, but less than an hours work from start to finish. I would recommend to all your customers that drive off road or want instant power without any problems (Holley) buy the Weber. A very happy desert dualer!

Hi Chris, Some months ago, I had the good fortune to let your guys have a 4.6 bottom end to build up for me. Piper cam, new timing chain, mains, etc with stage 1 heads and a Weber carb. Well it was installed into my Landrover lightweight hybrid and away I went, happy as Larry.
Until recently. I decided that perhaps there should be a little more performance available so I checked the carb. Oh, it was only opening about three quarters. After some drilling and re-doing the throttle cable connections, I now find that not only do I have more power on the primary chokes (surprise, surprise) but now the secondary chokes actually come in too. Before, I was as happy as Larry, whoever he may be, NOW, I'm even happier. The bottom line is, thanks for the motor, your guys did me proud! The local GTi brigade are less than happy with the 'old' Landrover that leaves them at the lights though. Thanks again,
Alan Hodgson. U.K.

Dakar - Update Hi Chris, Finally got the Dakar running this weekend after the problems with the thermostat housing & oil pump. Yep, It worked !As you will (hopefully recall) the car was suffering from a mid throttle flat spot and a general lack of performance. >

A complete Weber was fitted and it has solved all the problems, Throttle response is good and the car seems to have much more 'legs' now. To get a little more performance from the manifold, I got my dad to gas-flow it for me! I haven't had a chance to try it off-road in anger yet, but I have tested it at some pretty extreme angles both front/rear and sideways and no problems were evident. I have made the fuel re-circulate to prevent vaporization issues. So, I must congratulate you for your assistance when I drove over the other week and look forwarded to doing more business.

The Weber is tolerant of all engines and, unlike the Holley, jetting is never the issue. But like all upgrades it will not work well if the engine has other issues or problems (see why below).

Chris, Boing, Boing !
Actually, I'm just trying to put the carb back to where it was when you shipped it. I'm not sure if you remember but my local garage spent months playing around with the jetting to no avail. I plonked on the Mallory dual point at your suggestion and hey presto problem solved! So, it's way too rich and I just want it way the way you had it.

Weber Offroad Update

Spent this weekend in Salisbury for our annual off-roading expedition. Experienced no problems with the carb at all. Mid throttle response is excellent, and my mate in his 5.7 Chevy LR hybrid struggled to keep up with it on the road.

Dear Lisa

Thye Mallory dualpoint distributor was delivered yesterday as you promised. It took 1 hour to install it and test it. The engine has never worked better both on petrol and LPG. The mallory dual pointdistributor works well together with the ignition amplifier with automatic retard that I bought earlier. This was worth the money. Thank you!!

Harold

Dear RPi

By the way, I must say the Mallory ignition, power leads and coil you sent me make a huge differance. And when running in the water, I have no power loss at all.
I want to wish you and your team all the best in the New Year, and keep on the brillant service I got.

Thanks Bart Callens - Tunisia - with the D90 4.6Efi

Hi chris

The Mallory Dual Point is working a treat, you probably don't remember me, but I'm the computer programmer that spoke to you a couple of months ago. Just to refresh.

My F27 Self Build kit car, has a Rover P6 V8 in, and is running much better now with your Mallory Dizzy.

Just like to say it, thanks for all of the great help and service you gave me, all I can say is wow, runs like a dream now, and is v v fast, I'll send you some photos for inclusion on your web site, it's just fantastic now when you mash your throttle into the carpet.

Great, Andrew Bourne, :) LOL

Mallory, always the Icing on the cake

Hi Chris, Thanks for all your help, you have solved my problem. I had a hesitation problem that you suggested the dual point Mallory for. It worked like a charm, now power is way up, the engine is much happier and the driver doesn't feel like a kangaroo! Problem is, my local garage has spent so much time in the wrong area (re-jetting the Webber) that you can tell she's running rich. All I want to do is put it back to the way it was set up by you when you shipped it to me.
I wish there was an 'extension' of you here in Ottawa!
Best Regards, J Jones Ottawa

Hi Chris,
Thanks for your time last Friday afternoon, it was greatly appreciated. If you remember you listened to the engine in my kit car and instantly recognised a problem with the distributor, as it was still the original, which apparently has known problems.

You recommended that we change the distributor and electronic power amp, as this would solve the problem of the engine not starting when hot. This you fitted on the spot.

At the time you asked if I could let you know if this had indeed solved the problem, which it certainly seems to have done. You also asked if I could attach an image of my car for your website, which I have included as an Acrobat file. Let me know if you can view the image as I use an Apple Mac and not a PC.

Thank you once again, and I will be paying another visit to your premises in the near future, to discuss the Weber Carburetter option you mentioned to me which you felt would help with the rough running of the engine, with the current and original twin SU setup.

Kind Regards John Raines (Dax Rush)

Dear Chris and Ian
just wanted to send an update on my recent purchace of the toranado chip, now thatI have put a few hundred miles on my MGBV8 the verdict is in. And I am pleased to say that the results are wonderful. It has transformed the car into a pleasure to drive and noticeable differances include running leaner, better fuel milage, rock steady idle at 800 RPM ,and with out hanging up when coming to a stop. Also power band has increased and no more anoying speed limiting device,it is every thing you advertised it to be. With the current exchange rate being what it is, you know I was a bit apprahensive to spend that much money, but am pleased to say it was worth every penney. Thanks again for your help, Yours truly Jimmy D.

Dear Partsrange, After the outsatanding service after purchasing the Crank rebuild kit on and Piston rings on Thursday of last week I have come back for more.

Kind regards Iain

Hi Paul (and all the others at RPI)

I got my engines yesterday and they were well packed up. They all came in in excellent order and everything was there as I ordered.

Thenks for excellent service now and when I bought a turnkey engine from you in june 2003.

That engine works perfect, but I still have some work to do on the car ( a Rover P6). With the new engine (4.6 stage 3, piper 285) the car became totally different to drive and much more powerful.
And now I have finally managed to get a hand on an autobox that handles the torque and power from the engine, a four speed ZF from a ambulance. I'll might rebuild from ZF4HP22 to ZF4HP24 which should be about 30% stronger. I have been a little worried about the BW 65 that is in the car now.

Send my best regards to Lisa, Chris, Holly etc. and say that I am very satisfied with the service.

Thanks and best regards from
Ragnar

Feedback on our 4.6 litre engines.

Hi Chris, I'm Bart Callens from Tunisia. I must say the 4.6 you delivered to me summer for my Defender 90 is great. I don't regret I took the 4.6 instead of the 3.9. in my Defender 90 4.6 EFI (with tornado chip)

Racing 4.6 Range Rover in Barbados

Hi Chris, just a short note from down here in the land of eternal sunshine and coconuts with rum in them. My 4.6 that you built for me two years ago is still going strong. By the way, I am wheeling a fully rebuilt 1972 Range Rover and it goes like a bat out of the tropics.
Thanks
Marc Ward. Barbados

Hi Chris, Some months ago, I had the good fortune to let your guys have a 4.6 bottom end to build up for me. Piper cam, new timing chain, mains, etc. with stage 1 heads and a weber carb.
Well it was installed into my Landrover lightweight hybrid
Before, I was as happy as Larry, whoever he may be, NOW, I'm even happier. The down side of course, is the fuel consumption has taken a turn for the worse. I must stop using the performance quite so much!. The bottom line is, thanks for the motor, your guys did me proud! The local GTi brigade are less than happy with the 'old' Landrover that leaves them at the lights though.
Thanks again, Alan Hodgson. U.K.

I installed the new engine about 2.5 weeks ago. The difference between the 4.2 and 4.6 is like night and day, granted the 4.2 was pretty tired and neglected by the previous owner.
The engine has a very smooth idle yet the torque band is much broader thanks to the RPi/Piper cam. Off-line acceleration is fantastic and it feels like the engine will continue to pull until it runs out of road. I haven't done a 0 to 60 test, but it is on my list. The Headman headers have not been installed as of yet, I needed to make sure everything was good to go.
Even with all the performance upgrades, the 4.6 passed our smog test with flying colors. We thought it might run a little too lean due to the stock computer, however, according to the high RPM part of the smog test the CO and HC are right on the mark though I am still thinking about the chip upgrade. A quick rundown of the items I purchased from RPi is as follows: 4.6 short block Performance cam and timing kit, Head rebuild kit with Stage 3 valves, used rocker assembly, one set of valve keepers, Headers, not installed as of yet, and Gaskets. Items completed out here: All new valve seats installed with 3 angle grind Distributor re-curved Intake trumpets shortened and polished High performance 8mm ignition cables Let me know if this is an option.
Sincere regards,

David Golumbic USA

Chris, The 4.6 Stage III we put into the 1995 NAS Defender 90 Station Wagon now has plenty of break-in miles on it, and we took it to the track today. Stock 3.9 in this 90 ran 12.5 seconds 0-60 The 4.6 ran a best time of 7.78 seconds 0-60 this morning! Wow!
Owner of the D90 with the 4.6 called today to say how much he loved the truck, Said he towed his 26' boat home in 5th gear at about 85 mph, and could never tow the boat over 4th gear before. We have decided to keep ECR on the upper end of the RPi scale, so we will only be working with 4.6s and other performance mods, and some 3.9s. and will continue to do high end engines with you for a long time to come I think.
Mike. ECR Main USA.

Hi Chris, the engine I bought from you is great (4.6, stage 3). My car is running like compressed air. In a few days I will send you two photos of engine and car (MG). Thank you. Regards
Juergen. Germany

Hope all is well. We had our first nice spring days yesterday and today. I took 4.6 Moggie (Morgan) to the airfield and winched up my paraglider for the first flight of the year. Fantastic thermal conditions so I climbed rapidly to over 6000 ft and went away with the winds. Landed far away from home near a petrol station. Got a hike with two nice girls back to the field. Invited the nicest to a racy/tourqy tour in Moggie and it ended up with a successful date thanks to the enormous RPi 4.6 power ... (even all other Mog-friends are impressed). The engine performs perfectly. The oil now stays clean as syrup with no consumption and I feel the engine has started to loose up. Lovely!

When asked 'Was our car as fast as any of the TVRs that you drive all the time?'

Jeremy Clarkson replied 'Well, if it's any slower you can't notice it!'

Hi Lisa;
You have no idea how difficult it is to find parts for this car at a reasonable price here in the USA. Thank you very much for your quick attention to my problem. I will be sure to use your services whenever possible in the future. Sincerely, JIM

Dear Ian,

I just wanted to write and thank you and your team for all your help and support thoughout our recent engine etc. purchase. You will be pleased to hear every thing went according to plan and we were able to go on our family holiday. It was quite an experience to do an entire engine change ourselves (bearing in mind I'm 7 months pregnant and have difficulty bending over into the engine bay!!!) But as I said before everything went to plan and she is running like a dream.

What a superb product, I will have no hesitation in recommending you to all my Lanny pals. I will also be writing to Land Rover Owner Internation to alert all other enthusiasts of our experience with you.

Many Thanks again

Michelle and Peter

After a year of temp fixes and a great deal of headaches I recently replaced the engine in my 99 RR 4.6(GEMS) Callaway. Here is what I learned:

After extensive research of whether to rebuild, remanufacture, buy used, or buy new I decided to go with a new short engine from RPi in England. I was told and research confirmed that if you have a shifted liner on the 4.6 or 4.0 engines they are only good for boat anchors at that point. I found several people willing to sell me a rebuilt engine in the neighborhood of $2500. The fragility of these engines does not lend themselves well to this remedy.

So, I started to look for a new short engine at the best price. AB has them for $3995. The dealer wanted in excess of $4500 (I don't remember exactly only that it was ridicules). RPi wanted 1995.00 pounds (approximately $3525.00). You would think I would go with the AB considering they are the same engine from the factory and the shipping and tax would make the AB a more fiscally responsable choice. I would agree until I started adding some components.

Being that I have a RR that their are only 220 of I wanted to make sure the vehicle would last and keep the integrity in order. I decided to replace every component that I had read would or should need replacing within my mileage range (825000 at the time the decision was made).

Short engine
Engine front cover w/ oil pump
Lifters (16)
water pump

I saved a total of $752.49 buying from RPi.

Of course I also replaced the radiator, plugs, rocker shaft assymbly, belt, all related seals and gaskets. I also had the heads reworked, cleaned, and pressure tested by very competent technicians at Skragen in Houston. I would have replaced the heads but the stealer wanted $5212.22 EACH for the Callaway heads new. Yeah, I was going to pay them that LOL!

The removal and replacement of the engine was performed by The Rover Shoppe in Houston. In my opinion the best Land Rover mechanics in Texas hands down. If you are in Houston and need work done they are the place to go. I had dealt with other Rover mechanics in Houston and found them to be less than helpful (I won't name names)! Knowledgeable, courteous, fast, and patient they lend a helpful hand to our masochistic tendencies (in a positive way if that can be said).

RPi was very helpful in the process of picking and shipping the parts I needed. E-mail replies were handled quickly and informatively. It can be an intimidating ordeal to have an engine and parts shipped from abroad but they made the process simple. I never once thought they were going to take my money and run.

I don't often write favorably of any businesses I deal with. Most of the time I'm pessimistic. However in this case I can honestly say that RPi, Skragen, and the Rover Shoppe were tops.

Just my 2 cents add a grain of salt for flavor.

Give RPi a call and explain what you would like to achieve, at what price, and leave it to Chris Crane. Chris has the highest standard of business ethics that I have ever encountered, and I am completely confident that he would provide a wonderful engine for you at an excellent price. And you could have the knurled pulley fitted at the same time - as well as a set of the new exhaust manifolds Chris has developed. When you see these it will be apparent that they make the other designs look quite wrong - instead of turning downward like the standard LR cast iron variants (or the aftermarket alternatives) and then going through two 90 deg bends to exit rearwards, they duct the gasses straight out through the same hole in the valences and then have a single 90 bend rearwards - thus saving two 90 deg bends in the gas flow. They are also extremely well made - and far superior to any of the alternatives, including the "under the sump" cross flow designs. I remember reading a study of heat rejection in IC engines which cited the heat transfer from the manifolds into the head as a major source of thermal energy - so I would expect the engine to run cooler with the RPi manifolds too.

You are probably aware that while I think that the later LR (cross bolted) engines are the design equal of any of their competitors, I am not enthusiastic about having one in the standard Farmer Giles tune in my sports car. The thing is just too - stolid - like boiled cabbage and dumplings. Do not be concerned that if you tune it you will sacrifice low end power - it is not the case. After Chris has finished with it you will have a lot more power everywhere, and it will feel like it actually enjoys life too. But I would swap it for a 4.6, if I were you, and then you can sell the original to Button when he wants some more power.

I had an RPi 4.6 with a Tornado chip put in my '95 last year -- BIG improvement over the 3.9!!!

You ought to check out RPi's very informative website and e-mail Chris Crane, and he can tell you exactly what you'll need to make the switch. Apparently, a new fuel-map chip is essential – otherwise your 4.6 will run too lean and eventually burn up.

As memory serves, in addition to using a 3.9 camshaft (check out Piper performance cams), the 3.9 oil pickup pipe, and 'relieving' your 3.9 oil pan to make room for the 4.6 crank journals (the 4.6 oil pan won't fit in a Disco), you'll need a spacer, either on the crank shaft or the cam shaft (can't remember which) to allow the 3.9 timing sprockets and distributor drive to line up correctly.

You also might look into putting a mid-year '95 front cover with integral oil pump (B suffix 3.9 motor) as these are supposedly an improvement over the separate oil pump and front cover of the earlier 3.9s. The cam shaft thrust plate on the 4.6 will not fit with a 3.9 cam, but the B suffix front cover/oil pump has a peg on the inside that supposedly prevents cam knock.

Also, if you have the older 14-bolt heads, I believe you're supposed to leave the outer 4 bolts loose (or off entirely), otherwise they may cause a head gasket leak -- check with RPi on that. And use new headbolts.

Good luck!

I had a problem with Amsoil 20W-50 Racing oil in my RPi 4.6 -- I was losing about 1/2 quart of oil every fill-up (@240 miles) with no leaks and no smoke in a virtually new engine. I also noticed a slight 'fluttering' on hard acceleration at about 3500 rpm and above. The Amsoil tech surmised that this oil is so slick, it was blowing past the piston rings and suggested I switch to 'regular' Amsoil 10W-40, which I did. Since then, the oil loss has virtually stopped, although there is still some slight fluttering on hard acceleration.

I contacted Chris Crane at RPi, who recommends using Valvoline 20W-50 racing spec (non-synthetic) in their motors. He said that in most cases you may not have any problem with synthetics in Rover V8s because they are very forgiving motors with loose tolerances. However, they had had some problems with early cam wear in TVRs (sports cars running Rover V8s) using Mobile 1 -- apparently the problem is that the synthetics can be too slick/thin for the hydraulic lifters.

Anyway, I'm going to switch to Valvoline VR1 this week and see what the results are.

FWIW

Joe,

Chris Crane is a great Rover V8 engine resource for both his knowledge and parts. His site his www.RPiV8.com

Don't always go by the prices he has listed, call or email him, he is a really great person to deal with and I have picked his brains for years on Rover engine related questions.

As for my personal experience upgrades.

This can get $$ , I did this to my 88 RR I added a Piper Cam / Cloyes gear Set / Had the Heads rebuilt with oversize valves.

A fresh set of new or reman. injectors / A 8MM plug wire set, and not sure if you're a gems or non, but for the non, RPi has a rising rate upgraded fuel pressure regulator. Also I highly recommend the Optimax chip upgrade while we're shopping, a set of fresh cats and exhaust will always help.

I never got to Dyno mine, but RPi has all that data on record and many out there in the LR community have done the same upgrades.

I hope this helps you in your quest

Call Chris Crane at RPi for what a HPO 5.0 and all the adapters run, and all the other modifications needed, and emissions BS, you might be safer and 'money ahead' going with his Turnkey 5.2 V8s

Gregor,

Talk to Chris Crane @ http://www.v8engines.com, he has a 4.0 to 4.6 complete kit. He is honest and his prices relate to the high quality parts he sells in other words you get your $$$ worth from him.

Paul, you missed his intent TOWING the 4.0 is pretty much gutless there.

Chris Crane is a great guy to deal with, he may be on the high side of pricing, but with him you do get what you pay for. It's one of those things how fast can you afford to go.

If you're looking for a budget rebuild, he has that, also lots of MoD stuuf.

I had one of his built-up large valve 3.9s a few years ago with an Optimax Chip. It beat the s#*t out of the old tired 3.5. And way more power than my POS 4.0

His 5.2 upgrade is a Monster, Iwould like to see that go to a 6.0 some day then I'll buy it.

Hi Chris.

Re your suggestion that the fault is probably carb related.

You were right. It was, in fact, mechanic related, got another guy in and he retuned the carbs and they are now OK, what a lovely sound the V8 makes (my first). I am really grateful to you for taking the time to identify the problem for me, I know you're a busy man.

I will be in touch in the new year for LPG conversion and Mallory upgrade + A&R & Magnecor leads. Once again thank you and compliments of the season to you, your family and staff.

Kind regards Tony.

Dear Chris

I would like to congratulate you and all people of your company with Merry Christmas and wish you Happy New Year. Wish you to have more profitable business in New Year.

I would love to follow your advice, but unfortunately I live and work in Italy where they pay less than peanuts and expect more than monkeys working for them, also the pound is so strong that it makes everything a lot less affordable, although still cheaper than buying here. Maybe in the future I'll take you up on the offer but till then I just need to keep it cheap.

Thanks again and don't forget to read this month's issue of LRM as I think they will be printing my letter about you.

Regards Daren Uzzell lr671hpa@hotmail.com Italy

I´m the happy owner of a RR V8 '82.

It has a 3.9 cam, duplex chain, Mallory and a Weber 500 Edelbrock 1404 carb bought at RPI. I would now like to fit an Off-Road kit to the Weber, and have found a kit on the Edelbrock homepage: Off-Road Needles and Seats (pair) #1465. Is it possible to buy this kit from you, including shipment to Copenhagen, Denmark. I thank you in advance,

Frank R Denmark.

Dear Chris,
Many many thanks for the ever so quick replies you give. I have never experianced such good service from a company before. In fact before finding your advert in the LRM mag, being on page 148 this month I tried almost every advert in the previous 147 pages and got only one reply which was a 'sorry can't help you mate'. You are a godsend and if I weren't living in Italy I'd come and buy you a drink. Heck, if you're ever in my neck of the woods (North West Italy, west of Milan) I'll buy you a drink.

Daren U. Borgo Ticino Italy

Dear Lisa

Got the beast back, it IS very smooth. Installer has never seen a RR idle and run so smoothly before. I think he was having trouble believing his eyes and ears. Nice and clean, very driveable. Pretty much as expected i.e. not so quick as Weber in 2 door, feel the extra weight and don't get the same kick (and sound!) when the RPM has picked up. It is much more pleasant to use off-road as no more flame-outs. Expect with the extractors on and a bit of attention there's a tad more to come from this setup.

Dear Chris, I would like to say thanks for the excellent after sales service I received from RPi when I returned my short engine today due to a mark on the block face. Customers only find out how good a company is when you need to contact them with a problem, it's very refreshing to find [within the motor trade] a company like yours who care about their product and stand by warranties without quibble. A fellow V8 Manta Club member Jules Jones from Eastleigh, Hants. recommended RPi when I was looking to purchase the engine, I am very pleased I took his good advice and will have no hesitation in recommending R.P.I. to anyone looking to purchase. I shall also mention your good service in a letter to both the Opel Manta Owners Club and the V8 Manta register (two different clubs).

Thanks again Chris. Yours, Paul Holtom.

RR LWB w/ RPI 4.6L Phase 3 engine

Chris - Just wanted to follow up after receiving the engine and completing installation. Once the engine finally cleared customs 6 weeks ago (after they just sat on it and never even opened the box) the mechanic had a few challenges with installation. The most unusual was that the output of the crankshaft had a pin and the corresponding flywheel did not ... not sure what the resolution was with the local Rover dealership, but I wouldn't be surprised if a grinder or a drill was involved. The rest of the engine installation went just fine. Along the way the injectors were cleaned, I added Hedman headers (#39800) which are well constructed and cost around $120 plus $200 for a titanium finish ceramic coating. I love it when options cost more than the original part.
;^) Also had the lower intake manifold that you supplied port matched to the engine, upgraded to the Mallory unilite distributor and Jacobs Electronics ignition, mean green gear reduction starter, Tornado chip, plus all the other things you usually do when you have the engine out of the car for the first time in 7 years of life.

As for the engine ... I used the Crane cams break-in additive and Castrol straight 30wt oil. Initial burn in went perfect and after 20 minutes the car was ready for quick tour of the neighborhood. The engine runs fairly smooth at idle and appears to have a lot more power. I've been suffering with only partial throttle and a maximum of 3000 RPM until I get more miles on the engine and let the break-in finish. To date, I have 202 miles on the engine and drove it to work for the first time today.

Once I get a couple of thousand miles on it, I'll report back with the seat-of-the-pant-feel with the WOT test. ;^)

Also, I'd like to thank both you and Lisa for all of your help during the question and answer phase of the engine quest. You both were great and very responsive to my questions and made the ~$7K purchase from overseas completely manageable. Your company did a great job setting expectations and delivering on your promises and I have only positive things to say about the experience. I especially appreciate your willingness to build me a 'custom' engine (partway between long block and turn-key) and bundle all the parts so I wouldn't have to disassemble my current engine during the swap. I'll be happy to enthusiastically recommend RPi to my fellow Rover buddies.

Thanks again, Ron Story '95 RR LWB w/ RPI 4.6L Phase 3 engine

Dear Lisa

I have just taken delivery of the engine, it is all in order. I had no problems collecting it and the Bax Global rep was very good, he told me when it would clear customs and was right. All arrangements were perfect and simple and I would recommend them to anybody for shipping stuff. I will let you know of any further developments as we install the engine .

Thank you for all you help

This is Julian King from Durban, South Africa. You have a fantastic website----

Dear Chris/Lisa.
Julian King here. Just a word of thanks for your efficiency in processing my order. All arrived safely while I was in London and was brought home as hand luggage.Gave myself a hernia and a Customs Officer a bit of a fright when he saw this long metal object on his screen! Happily, he knew what a camshaft was for when he inspected it, but the pressure regulator threw him a little. I am passing the info I got from your website to a friend who does a fair amount of Landrover work for others as a sideline. I trust he finds it as useful as I did.

Nice to do business with you.
Julian.

Dear Lisa, thank you for the prompt and helpful way that you attended to our order. We look forward to dealing with you again.

Regards, John.

Hi Chris, Some months ago, I had the good fortune to let your guys have a 4.6 bottom end to build up for me. Piper cam, new timing chain, mains, etc. with stage 1 heads and a weber carb. Well it was installed into my Land Rover lightweight hybrid without too many problems (none of RPi's making) and away I went, happy as Larry.

The down side of course, is the fuel consumption has taken a turn for the worse. I must stop using the performance quite so much! The bottom line is, thanks for the motor, your guys did me proud!
The local GTi brigade are less than happy with the 'old' Land Rover that leaves them at the lights though.

Thanks again,

Alan Hodgson

Chris, Today I ordered the RP4 cam kit you recommended to me. Again I want to thank you and your team for the information and explanations I was given.
There is no doubt that if my engine upgrade and the parts reliability are of the same level as your availability and your good commercial know-how, I will be fully satisfied.

Best Regards.

Hi Chris

I have to say that the phone call to you the other day was the best money I've ever spent. Following your suggestion I pinched a timing gun, had a look at the ignition timing on the weekend and discovered the problem. The cloth-eared pillock who set it up for me before had the damn thing set to 2degrees AFTER top dead not 2deg before as Rover recommend. As the saying goes, if you want something done properly do it yourself.

Many thanks for your help. I really appreciate it and if that is the improvement gained with just a phone call I can't wait to see what your hardware can do!!

Best regards
Stephen. (Falklands Islands)

Dear Lisa, Re: Balance Resistor - received. That was quick and very apprecieated. Many thanks Andrew Zenon

Hello, Chris and Lisa, The parts I ordered are already here! Very good service indeed! Thanks again! Matthijs Meulenbelt

Don't hesitate. Take it up to Chris at RPi and get him to sort it out and then send the bill to the original garage. At least that way it will be sorted and you will have a usable vehicle. I had similar problems reently with my local Landrover garage, Brooklyns. They fitted a new engine for me which I had bought from RPi and carried out some other work. The first problem, when I eventually got the Rover back was that they sent me out with the drain plug to the gearbox so loose all the oil had drained out. After taking the car backwards and forwards to them over the next few weeks I came to the conclusion that they were incapable of sorting out even the simple things like oil leaks (this was a brand new engine), connecting the coil, ballast resistor, reconnecting the vacuum to the diff lock etc. etc. So I took it to RPi. Half a day's work later it was a different vehicle, oil leaks sorted, one or two dangerous items put right and the engine properly tuned.
I am still thinking about suing Brooklyns but at least I now have a working vehicle. RPi are a long way away from almost anywhere (Norwich) but I have not found anyone else that knows V8s in the way that Chris does. I also got him to fit a gas conversion which I am pleased with and which made the journey to him worthwhile.
Good luck!

How can you top that !!

Another favorite comment!
Some people like to listen to music while they work ... Me? Now I've been on your site, I just work with the sound of your V8 in the background. DD.

Hi Chris
Further to our brief chat on Thursday, I'm just putting "pen to paper" (in an email!?) to say how pleased I am with the work done on my old Discovery last Tuesday.
Despite all the hassle of getting there (350 miles) and the expense of parts and labour - I am sure it has been worth the journey and the money. Arriving (courtesy of the AA) with a vehicle that would neither run on lpg or on petrol, Steve worked for several hours to solve the problems and leave me with a vehicle that is running better than ever.
Now it starts with just a turn of the key in the morning; goes up the road to work without a stutter or stall and runs sweetly on petrol or lpg.

There's no doubt that RPi's expertise with V8s and their conversion to LPG is unique. Thanks again to Steve and, by the way, a steady supply of coffee from your team - never mind the Cadbury's Creme Egg and the cheese toastie! Best wishes Robin Davies Carmarthen West Wales

Chris Entered your site address and left the room for a few minutes - heard the V8 sound from the kitchen. Wife (working quietly next to PC) was frightened to death. Suggest you have a link button on every page labelled 'play that sound again'. Shame it disappears when you enter the site. Love it!

Another favorite Web Site comment.!!
I have to say I think your site is superb, working in communications I come across a lot of sites and get constantly frustrated at poor design, speed and navigation but you've done a great job. It really gives your company a great professional and meticulous image with obvious pride in your work ... and that's before anyone even gets to the engineering side.

Rpi congratulations on the website
It's the best I have seen, and believe me I have seen hundreds in the last week, even a non-mechanic like me could understand what you were getting at with regard to condition of ignition system for LPG, hence the upgrade to Mallory dual point and magnicor leads if I ever get it to you.
Kind regards Tony

Chris
First of all, congratulations on an extremely informative Website. I have thoroughly enjoyed reading through the various sections which have caused me to run back and forward from the computer to my vehicle outside to check different things so as to make up my mind about what may be wrong.

Lovely!

Thanks and best regards from
Ragnar

I have not had the vehicle above 200 feet MSL as yet and really look forward to a trip up north in the near future. The rockers and shafts also went in without a hitch as did the pressure regulator. I am seeing a fuel consumption improvement of around 13% and unholy (by comparison with pre RPi stuff) flat land performance increase.

That's all for now

Best Regards,

Rob S
Hi Chris,

I have a 1997 Range Rover HSE here in Boston, USA. When I bought the car I was not happy with its slug-like performance and spent quite a lot of time researching the web for the best place to go for advice on how to improve the performance of the car.

Chris at RPI was spot on - thanks to him the car now sports a Tornado Chip, Magnecor Leads, and Aftermarket Shocks. The car now feels a LOT more responsive and handles much better. I could not be happier!!! My next planned mod will be superflare trumpets as the car needs to breather better before one considers doing any work on the engine. Great guys - great advice - what more could you ask for?

Best
Alex

Hello Chris.
I just wanted to let you know, that I have ordered the parts for my engine swap, and aside from not specifying that I need the cam for a Gems block/Hotwire application, all went smooth.
Most importantly, I just wanted to say "Thank You" for your time and patience with me on this project. Your phone call a few weeks ago really surprised me. And your knowledge that you shared with me has been invaluable. That is Outstanding customer service ! I will e-mail you after the I install the engine, as I still need to buy the tornado chip.
Once again, thank you.( To Lisa as well ) I am looking forward to doing business with you again Sincerely, Robert

Chris

I got the chips and fitted them last night. I think the most difficult part of the process was getting the covers off the old chips as I was afraid of damaging the circuit board! The instructions are pretty simple - it makes it about as difficult as changing a plug! After I fitted the chips, the engine sounded a bit rough at first which I assume was down to the computer needing to re-learn the engine parameters, but this smoothed out after the first trip.

Once out on the road, initial results are very positive - I never saw 24 MPG on the trip computer before! Kick-down seems much more immediate, and acceleration more postive rather than the "oh, you want to go faster....? right... er... hang on... change down... wait a mo... here we go... any minute now... there you are...." that I was used to.

I'll be back in touch probably mid-August to arrange the LPG part - I don't have time to get this done before September since my weekends are fully booked.

LPG. On the spot customer comment.. !!

Everyone thought I was strange to convert my car, but I'm the one laughing all the way to the bank and to the gas refill station.

No queues there! And no-one profiteering, garage in Derby charging £1.99 a litre for unleaded!

Dear Chris

New Range Rover 4.0 (Gems) Re-chipped

Following my visit to you yesterday, I am happy to report the following: Consumption on the trip to you from home was 19mpg. My fuel consumption on the trip home was 22.3mpg. - You said it would improve. (these figures are according to the onboard computer)

The vehicle is also far more willing and pulls harder with less throttle I must congratulate you on your level of service offered to us.

The coffee and lolipop for the family was a nice touch. I am extremely suspicious about all in the motor trade and it was refreshing to find someone who tells it as it is. I look forward to a gas conversion to my vehicle and maybe a couple of other tweaks at the same time. Thank you again for your hospitality.

Best regards Rory Bostock

Unbelievably, From just a chip upgrade, you can expect an extra 15% economy -- 15% of the price of fuel is equal to 45 pence per gallon (UK) So what should you expect from further RPi Upgrades? It's well worth enquiring.

I went to RPi after 6 months researching LPG conversions for V8s. My 3 criteria were quality, value for money and fitness for purpose. RPi managed to score 4 out of 3 - 4 being exceptional customer service - in that despite my lobbing in several last minute requirements for handling improvements etc. they delivered on time to budget whilst coordinating the activities of 2 other companies e.g. a specialist in Sat Nav installations. The outcome is an HSE Range Rover which has the fuel costs of the average saloon, the practicality of an estate [no tanks in the boot yet a >>300 mile range] and road manners to shame some "sports" cars. So, if you like to have your automotive cake and eat it - with icing & cream too - the trip to their part of Norfolk is definitely worthwhile.

Range Rover Optimax Upgrade

After having a good drive back to Northampton last night, the differences made by the chip became very apparent, and the car has been measurably improved in both performance and driveability.
Cheers, Bill Barclay. Scotland

I installed the new engine about 2.5 weeks ago. The difference between the 4.2 and 4.6 is like night and day, granted the 4.2 was pretty tired and neglected by the previous owner.

I shortened and polished the intake trumpets and had the distributor re-curved as well as all the performance items that RPI supplied. You can feel that the engine is breathing much better with the Stage 3 valves and the additional plennum volume added by the short trumpets. I went ahead and had all new valve seats installed and had then do a 3 angle grind like you recommended.

The engine has a very smooth idle. yet the torque band is much broader thanks to the RPI/Piper cam. Off line acceleration is fantastic and it feels like the engine will continue to pull until it runs out of road. I haven't done a 0 to 60 test, but it is on my list.

The Headman headers have not been installed as of yet, I needed to make sure everything was good to go. Even with all the performance upgrades, the 4.6 passed our smog test with flying colors. We thought it might run a little too lean due to the stock computer however, according to the high RPM part of the smog test the CO and HC are right on the mark though I am still thinking about the chip upgrade.

A quick run down of the items I purchased from RPI are as follows:
4.6 short block Performance cam and timing kit , Head rebuilt kit with Stage 3 valves Used rocker assembly One set of valve keepers Headers, not installed as of yet Gaskets

See the Smog test, "Click Here"

Items completed out here:
All new valve seats installed with 3 angle grind , Distributor re-curved
Intake trumpets shortened and polished High performance 8mm ignition cables Let me know if this is an option.

Sincere regards,
David Golumbic USA

Chris,

Well got the Optimax chip in as you know, working splendidly.............then I received the exhaust, very pretty! Bolted on now and the old RR is a different beast, completely excellent. Great note and superb free flow, it feels superb.

How can I get a recommendation to you for your comments page, I am thrilled to bits! Many, many thanks, and my very best wishes to yourself and Lisa for the holidays,

RR LWB w/ RPI 4.6L Phase 3 engine

Chris-- Just wanted to follow-up after receiving the engine and completing installation. Once the engine finally cleared customs 6 weeks ago... (after they just sat on it and never even opening the box) ... the mechanic had a few challenges with installation. The most unusual was that the output of the crankshaft had a pin and the corresponding flywheel did not... not sure what the resolution was with the local rover dealership, but I wouldn't be surprised if a grinder or a drill was involved. The rest of the engine installation went just fine. Along the way the injectors were cleaned, I added Headman headers (#39800) which are well constructed and cost around $120 plus $200 for a titanium finish ceramic coating. I love it when option cost more than the original part. ;^) Also had the lower intake manifold that you supplied port matched to the engine, upgraded to the Mallory Unalite distributor and Jacobs Electronics ignition, mean green gear reduction starter, Tornado chip, plus all the other things you usually do when you have the engine out of the car for the first time in 7 years of life.

As for the engine... To date, I have 202 miles on the engine and drove it work for the first time today.

I especially appreciate your willingness to build me a "custom" engine (partway between long block and turn-key) and bundle all the parts so I wouldn't have to disassemble my current engine during the swap. I'll be happy to enthusiastically recommend RPI to my fellow rover buddies.

Thanks again,

Range Rover Weber Carb and (eventual) 3.9 Engine upgrade

Hi RPI genii!

Cam kit now in ancient 3.5 Rangie, along with the 500cfm weber you supplied a while back. So impressed with this engine, as it runs in it just gets better. Fabulous.

The 3.9 ran first turn! Smooth, and very lively. Haven't even been up in rpm or into secondaries yet, due running in. Only 100km so far, yet fuel gauge hardly moved. Very relaxing to drive, and having to take care as it builds speed so willingly.
New subject- just got sent flying solo in a helicopter this morning! If you ever visit Sydney come flying! I have shares in a Company with 4 IFR a/c, including a Saratoga, so it's a simple matter. Somehow I think an RPI light V8 would be just the go for a homebuilt helicopter.

Kind regards, Martin Geliot ( Australia).

Range Rover LSE 4.6 conversion In Sweden.

See how simple it all is, " Click"

Snow cool

I purchased a 4.6 long engine for a RR LSE. I have it properly installed now and I am very pleased. I have driven it approx. 3000 miles. Now all sorted. I want to share my experience with you

The 4.6 with its Tornado chip give magnificent performance to the vehicle. The torque (compared to the 4.2 I had) is impressive and sends off the machine to the excess of my expectations. I never though a Range Rover could perform like this. I have also noted a reduction in fuel consumption, at least at modest speeds. I am sending you two pictures , one at vacation for the RR) and one at work. Use them as you want. When pulling the trailer at around 100 kmph I ran the vehicle at 15 liters per 100 km.

(Quote from the UK Land Rover register)

From: "Peter BRADLEY"
Date: Thu, 15 Apr 1999 18:10:08 +0100
Subject: Re: Gas

A mate of mine just had his RR converted by RPI Engineering. The full conversion, (to Dual fuel remember, petrol or gas, it runs on both), was about 1200UKP.

However, whilst the motor was being tinkered with by *the* V8 experts, he decided to have it re-chipped, new performance cam, and new performance SS exhaust, all fitted at the same time. This little package brought the whole lot up to 2000UKP.

The performance enhancements actually *improve* fuel economy, and although the engine burns about the same mpg on gas as it does on petrol, gas is so much cheaper that he has calculated the RR is now returning the equivalent of 42mpg at current petrol costs! Much better than the Tdi he had previously.

In addition to this he says that it runs smoother and quieter on gas than petrol. In short he is delighted. I know of others around these parts (North Yorkshire) who have had Discos and RRs converted from Tdi to V8 so as to convert to gas. The thinking here is that you can currently sell a Tdi for decent money, and pick up a V8 relatively cheap. In a couple of years time you might not be able to give a Tdi away.

The government has promised to freeze the duty on gas whilst hiking up the duty on petrol and especially diesel. The major oil companies have plans for a major network of gas outlets.

Further to my 4.6 upgrade

First I got to say that I had a great time at the MECC in Maastright.( me too) Hope you liked it as well. Learned a lot from you (again) ( no I just confirmed what you already suspected) and saw the stage 1 and 3 heads live which is completely different than seeing it on the website!! I also tried to push a dutch guy into buying a 4.6 from you in the process. Although I have the impression that the 4.6 is putting more stress on my gearbox than my old 3.5..... By the way the 4.6 is getting more loose now and is fun to drive. I sometimes just drive away in second gear if I wanna make a fast 'takeoff'.

Chris,

Thanks for letting me buy one of your demonstrators last year. I have had the vehicle for a little over a year and it has been wonderful. In fact, I recently took it for its first MOT and no problems!
I have just fitted your A & R unit - it is early days, but I seem to be going further with no loss of power. Hills that were a problem before are easy now. Keep up the good work and let us have more innovation.

Chris,

I don t know whether you will remember me, but I rang from Melbourne, Australia 2 weeks ago and you gave me some advice on my recent conversion to a 4.7Ltr V8 in my 87 Range Rover. Well the regulator arrived and we fitted it today, to say the car has been transformed is a monumental understatement, it's like having 4 extra cylinders! I just wanted to thank you very much for your spot on straight forward, honest, advice. As a member of the Range Rover Club in Australia and past treasurer I will be putting an article in the magazine which we send to clubs nationwide here. Once again thank you very much.

Optimax Chipping for efficiency

Thanks for the correcting me on the Optimax for the 95, 3.9, 5-speed U.S. Disco. The chip works far more than i expected. I have a Borla stainless steel cat back exhaust (free flow with a rumble). I port matched the intake to the heads, flowed the trumpet base to manifold. Increased the trumpet length by 1 1/2" (38.1mm).

Many thanks, for finding someone who knows their product and what we want.

Thanks again! Carl, California.

Robert Goodale Australia

 Off roading for sure. Chris,

I now have the carbie + manifold I purchased from you on the Rangie, and by and large it is performing well--mucking about with the float levels +offroad seats has improved its uphill response on slow climbs at low rev/low range. Although off-road (not fast rally racing like your Dubai correspondent) I think I would bet my life on the Strombergs rather than the Weber --on road it is veerrryy smooth!

Two questions.
{short description of image}How would you try to minimise it cutting out on extreme downhill inclines at low revs?

{short description of image}The key word here from you pics is ( extreme) you could run it duel fuel as lpg wont care if you turn it upside down
{short description of image} I am having trouble restarting (from hot), and I suspect fuel vaporization. I know this is Australia + summer+ + slow off-road stuff (where everything does get very hot), but it also happens on the bitumen as well eg stopping at a petrol station (as you do!), and then trying to restart. The Electrics are okay
{short description of image}I would be inclined disagree with your last comment, I suggest your spark quality is low, either due poor earth or tired starter drawing too much current when hot, or poor spark output due distributor condition and plug lead type.

Now she idles smooth, and the backfiring is limited only to a very abrupt "parp" immediately after releasing the throttle - must be for less than 0.25 seconds. The rest of the overrun is clean. My conclusion is that I am very satisfied with the result and I feel I got my money's worth. PS: I'm already saving for a 5.2 for the HSE - yet to be purchased ;-) Kind regards Philip Lochner

Hi Chris, I'm Bart Callens from Tunesia.
I must say the 4.6 you delivered to me summer for my Defender 90 is great. I don't regret it I toke the 4.6 in stead of the 3.9. Now I have a question. I saw you have now dual chip ECU's.
Tunisia looks good.

This is the life, And with the Power and reliability of an RPi high torque engine, who could want more.

4*4 Convoy Off roading is so much fun

* Can I use one of these in my Defender 90 4.6 EFI (with tornado chip) ?

* What would be the benefits of a dual chip ECU ?

* What will it cost ?

* Can I replace the chip myself ?.

Greetings,

Bart Callens

Chris,
The 4.6 Stage III we put into the 1995 NAS Defender 90 Station Wagon now has plenty of break in miles on it, and we took it to the track today. Stock 3.9 in this 90 ran 12.5 seconds 0-60 The 4.6 ran a best time of 7.78 seconds 0-60 this morning!

Wow!

Owner of the D90 with the 4.6 called today to say how much he loved the truck, Said he towed is 26 boat home in 5th gear at about 85 mph, and could never tow the boat over 4th gear before. We have decided to keep ECR on the upper end of the RPI scale, so we will only be working with 4.6s and other performance mods, and some 3.9s. So we won't be buying in bulk, but will continue to do high end engines with you for a long time to come I think.

3.9 Land Rover Upgrade from a 2.6 6cyl petrol.

inquiry: Hi, just a "reccomendation" for you to print on your website! I've upgraded my Landrover S3 109 from a 2.6 6cyl petrol to a 3.9 V8 from you, and WOW! It's smoother, quieter (despite "sports" (very loud) exhaust) and pulls like a train in any gear! Considering the 6cyl needed new pistons (£1000+ of work) fitting a V8 has saved me money, as at least you can find parts for them

John U..

Chris, You are to be congratulated on the restoration of Fred's Land Rover.

The Web article is brilliant. By the way my ex MOD V8 that I bought off you last summer and that I installed with no difficulty in my 1982 Range Rover gets better everyday and runs as quiet as a sewing machine. It performs smoothly and quietly. So much so that I have ripped out the soundproofing so I can actually hear the engine. It is something of which I am very proud. Hope you don't mind me refering to RPI in my website. Regards Dave Lowe Derby.

Marc W. Peifer LWB 93 Landy 4.6 conversion

I would also like to inform you and your colleagues that the 4.6L that was installed in my '93 LWB is performing splendidly just as you said it would. I have several friends with Land Rovers that are quite envious, and are likely to be in contact with your company in the near future.

I can honestly say that it has been a pleasure to deal with RPI, and my smooth running Rover is testament to the fine work that you do. Please let me know if I can somehow express the appreciation for your 'living up to your end' of the bargain in delivering a true bolt-in long block; even my mechanic was surprised, and he is not easy to impress. Again thanks, and I will forward some action photos as soon as mud season is upon us here in Southeast Michigan. I can't wait... Very best regards,

Land Rover 101 (LPG and Petrol)

Chris, Just a brief note to say I have just returned from Spain with my 101FC with the new engine. It's a cracker and so smooth. We came over the Pyrenees via Andorra and the torque makes it simple. Many thanks for the short engine, bits and advice.

A comment from a French customer ( 3.9 short engine and LPG Gas conversion.)

Other than that, well I have done just over 10,000 miles so far and nothing tomention, other than the fact that my LPG conversion has almost paid for itself! In another 10.000 it will also pay for the new block.

Anyhow, I hope business is well with you,

(Range Rover 3.5 to 4.6 conversion) (Flapper type) with Evo 4 computer upgrad. to complete.

Dear Chris,
I've been to Power Engineering in Uxbridge today, to say my car has been transformed is a massive understatement. Both Mark and Merv (of Power Engineering) were most helpful, there understanding of things electrical and ability to put this in 'laymans' terms is wonderful. For any prospective purchasers of your 4.6 conversion if keeping the old flapper type injection system, I cannot stress how much more drivable this ECU conversion makes the engine. It was a joy to drive home today - so smooth and was just what I imagined the conversion to be like.

Thanks for replying so quickly,

Either you're very bored or incredibly dedicated to your customers. I think the latter!

Dear Lisa : I received the cyl. head rebuild kit you sent me this morning, I would like to thank you for your really fast service. Thanks again regards: Andrea Gordini

Hi Chris,
The engine I bought from you is great (4.6, stage 3). My car is running like compressed air. In a few days I will send you two photos about engine and car (MG).

Thank you.
Regards
Juergen

Thanks, John Roper, Vintage Sporting Cars,

Hi Chris, Some months ago, I had the good fortune to let your guys have a 4.6 bottom end to build up for me. Piper cam, new timing chain, mains, etc. with stage 1 heads and a weber carb. Well it was installed into my Land Rover lightweight hybrid without too many problems (none of RPi's making) and away I went, happy as Larry.

Good luck!

Dear All
Thanks very much for all of your help which I got free of charge. Your back up service is second to none. Thanks especially to the girls on the end of the phone, Steve for all his advice on setting up the Leonardo and Chris for running such a great company.
I believe success is gauranteed for you in the future if you continue running it as you do and with such a committed team.
Many many thanks

Bruce Forbes Zambia.

Sirs,
Firstly may I congratulate you on a fantastic website - I found it invaluable when recently rebuilding my 3.5 V8 after a rebore etc and the camshaft kit you supplied has worked wonders.

Kind Regards

Just to say thanks for your brilliant service
I ordered my Magnecor leads by e-mail from you on Friday and I was fitting them by midday Saturday!
Pity more companies don't function like you.
Thanks again, Stuart Nussey

Gentlemen!
I own a 1994 DISCO that is getting tired with 104,000 miles. Your website was (is) fantastic, and has given me tons of ideas on how to 'replenish' my vehicle.
A Future customer,

Dear Sirs, First of all, I would congratulate your company for having so good a website! A lot of useful info.

Dear Chris
Well done for an outstanding website. I am a longstanding fan of all things (Rover) V8, but have only recently acquired my first and am therefore on a steep learning curve! Your informative site has already proved incredibly useful.
Henry, London

Your homepage is very good (ask my wife if I spend time in front of it) I must say, that you are 'miles ahead' of most people in the UK. When it comes to MGs and V8s - I don't think anybody else is on the net.

Dear Sirs,
First of all many congratulations for having what must be the most informative website that I have ever come across.
Just the kind of useful information that I always seek when visiting a website but rarely find. My reason for looking you up is that I plan to fit a Rover V8 engine into a kit-car that I am building.
Many thanks Brian O'Connor
